Is My Deck Safe?

If you have a deck, it's important to make sure it's safe for use. Here are some things to check to ensure that your deck is safe:

  1. Check the Deck Boards: Inspect the deck boards for any signs of rot, warping, or cracking. Replace any boards that are damaged or deteriorated.

  2. Check the Ledger Board: The ledger board is the board that attaches the deck to the house. Make sure it's securely attached with bolts and not just nails. If there are any signs of rot or deterioration, have it inspected by a professional.

  3. Check the Railings: Make sure the railings are secure and not wobbly. Check for any signs of rot or damage. Railings should be at least 36 inches high to prevent falls.

  4. Check the Stairs: Make sure the stairs are secure and not wobbly. Check for any signs of rot or damage. Stairs should have a minimum depth of 10 inches and a maximum height of 7 ¾ inches to prevent tripping.

  5. Check the Support Posts: Check the support posts for any signs of rot or damage. Make sure they are secure and not wobbly.

  6. Check the Fasteners: Make sure all the screws and bolts are tight and in good condition. Replace any rusted or corroded fasteners.

  7. Check the Lighting: Make sure the deck is well-lit to prevent tripping and falling. Consider adding solar lights or low voltage lighting to improve visibility.

By performing these checks, you can help ensure that your deck is safe for use. If you have any concerns or doubts about the safety of your deck, it's always a good idea to have it inspected by a professional
